When you get a last minute call to float the Deschutes you do what you can to accommodate. Dustin Revel, brother to George, had an empty boat after his buddies backed out. I booked a flight, organized my camera gear, and set off for a long weekend on the river.
We launched late Saturday morning with stoneflies slamming us in the face, a sign of things to come. What followed was a few days of brilliant dry fly fishing with big bugs under warm, clear skies. The Deschutes carves through high mountain desert with sweeping views and prolific wildlife, making it a photographer's paradise. Despite some close calls, no cameras were damaged in the making of this essay.
